Walking on Waves

North Devon’s leading surf school, surf hire and surf shop operating from Saunton Sands and Croyde bay.

Walking on Waves

Sarah Whiteley grew up looking over Saunton Sands, right between Croyde and Braunton. After years at the top of the competitive surfing game (British and European Champion), she decided to return to her roots and give something back to the sport by setting up Walking on Waves Surf School. Chances are you could get lessons from one of Britain’s most successful female surfers.

I believe in, and take pride in, working with surfers at all levels – from the first attempt to competition coaching. There’s a joy that comes from seeing someone stand up for the first time that invigorates me every time. Equally, there’s a sense of fulfillment at helping someone nail a maneuver that they’ve been working on for 3 months.

Saunton is an amazing beach to teach, learn and progress on. It helps us in the development of new standards and techniques and it’s also a great playground. The beach is known for its long, slow waves. When the beach is busy, you can escape the crowds along the 3 miles of shoreline.

  • 3 Mile Long Shoreline

  • Slow, peeling beginner and longboarder wave

  • Golden Sand with very few rocks

OUR CUSTOMERS SAY

A few kind words from our wonderful customers and friends.

We signed up for the three day (6 hour) course. We are 50+ and had never tried surfing before. It was worth every penny. The staff were professional, friendly and encouraging. All equipment was provided. This course was the highlight of our holiday.

LYNNE W

A fantastic experience. The whole team made our first experience of surfing great fun, as they were enthusiastic, encouraging, experienced and very patient!

KATE K

This beach is perfect for beginners, you are not more than waist/chest depth in the water and the waves are sufficient but not scary. When you are told the wet suits are warm and you won’t notice how cold the sea is – believe them, we stayed toasty for the few hours we were out!
